In all martial arts disciples, one major essence is to respect the senior, the elderly, and the higher rank member.

One may ask, what is the best form of respect? Does one must bow during class, or consult them upon a plan/program.

Does the senior on the other hand must earn the respect? A close friend of mine talk to me about her working environment, she has 5 staff under her, two were much older than her. Therefore often enough they did not see eye to eye with her. Yes I lack of certain experiences, yes, I new to the environment but I do has other qualities there must be a reason why I was put there! She explained.

It’s remind me of a familiar situation that sometime we face in a association, in where new member come in with new ideas, often enough it does not consult the senior. Now whether the idea is good or bad in applications will only be known in later stages.
But the action today already put in emotion a chain of event that may be harmful to the associations in the end.

Respect the senior, try to understanding their stands/ believes. They are there much longer than we, they have faced all sort of difficulties without the new breed and survive. Do not simply walk over them. Yes, not all of them may be superior intellect.

The seniors on the defense must also improve their knowledge as we need to be more wise and full of wisdom then the person we were yesterday.

A few malay proverb stated that'kecil jgn disangka anak, besar jgn disangka bapa',Ada angin, ada pokoknya...& Ada aku dipandang hadap, tiada aku dipandang belakang.

In my friend’s scenario her subordinate prefer to resign.

Martial Arts or Culture Tournament. Do we need them?

Spoken to a friend of mine over the past weekend. I was telling him about an internal competition that IPPM is planning to organize. After hearing from me the detailed of the tournament. He asked me why I did not included element of education in it. Then I asked what does he meant,

He explained `It likes this, normally in a tournament it all about competing whether as an individual or group. The best for that day win it. But it not encourages or educates them to be a better pesilat. Why not include some slip PowerPoint presentation on Hang Tuah, Mak Kilau or Places of history or maybe an important event that occurs as eg. The killing o JWW birth or Kerajaan Kedah Tua as in exmple’.

I personally think it a good idea but…...Point of the tournament is to compete nor to be an informative centre, maybe during some camping

The story of Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Dijulang
Its legend is written in the book, Tuhfat al-Nafis.It has been told that in 1699, during the reign of Sultan Mahmud Shah II, pirates were storming the shores of southern Johor, from Mersing to Pulau Penyengat and Riau. Laksamana (Admiral) Megat Seri Rama, known as Laksamana Bentan, named after his origin, Bintan Island, was ordered to stop the menace. He left his beloved wife, Wan Anum who was heavily pregnant behind while he went to stop the pirate attacks.
His absence presented an opportunity to a former palace officer, who was jealous of Megat Seri Rama, to plot against him. Wan Anum eagerly craves a piece of jackfruit, taken from the palace orchard, that was on its way to be presented to the Sultan. The penghulu or the head of a sub-district, who was sending the fruit to the palace sympathised with Wan Anum. He stole a piece of jackfruit and gave it to Wan Anum. The Sultan, who noticed that the fruit had been cut, before he tasted the fruit, was so angered with the penghulu's action. His thoughts were also poisoned by the jealous palace officer who said that Wan Anum's action had obviously brought shame to the Sultan, leaving the Sultan to eat the rest of the fruit after her. The sultan ordered the women to the palace for punishment. Desperate for her life and the child she bore in her belly, Wan Anum told the sultan that the fruit that she ate was for her child. The Sultan asked for proof and the woman's belly was cut, and the child was seen with the piece of the jackfruit.
The murder was kept secret to all the palace inhabitants. Laksamana Megat Seri Rama discovered the murder of his wife and child when he returned from the war. He decided to seek revenge. On one Friday afternoon, during the Friday prayers, while the Sultan was lifted up (julang) by his men, he was ambushed and stabbed to death by the Laksamana. Before he drew his last breath, he casted a curse which forbidded the sons of Bintan to touch the grounds of Kota Tinggi for eternity. If not, all of them will vomit blood to death. The Laksamana died as well as the sultan. Sultan Mahmud Syah, was known then as Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Dijulang, buried in Kampung Makam, Kota Tinggi, while Laksamana Megat Seri Rama at Kampung Kelantan, also in Kota Tinggi. To this day, people still believed that the curse still exist and most Bintanese still feared to come to Kota Tinggi. (Other versions of this story state that the curse lasts merely seven generations.)

Normally, when talking about a discipline martial artists. We will talk about their exercise routines and eating habits. How about theirs behavior or attitude for example conversation skills. It is known that some people like to talk big about their achievement or prefer to highlight other people weaknesses in order to cover their own weakness. Among things that Ramadan teaches me is to make less conversation, to convert on important issues and not to stand facing into unnecessary argument.

Meditation – worldly known as a form of discipline in which a person will try to condition the body, mind and soul into a single conscience. Normally in order achieve this. A person must first, must be able to be in a deeper state of relaxation. Unlike the types of relaxation that we are getting from watching movie, cooking or mostly Malaysia’s favorite method which is eating. But the type of relaxation that in where a person is being able let go the grip of crazy world in where we live in and become peace with oneself. To let go the stress of work, family, relationship, friends, money and all that routinely will be in our head (mind technically). One shall say it is extremely difficult to do right!!!.

Readers please understand this blog was created as a platform for members of IPPM to share our thoughts, activities and experiences with the readers of this blog. Not necessary it the same as Ajar-ajar Tua/Grandmaster Megat Ainuddin believe or practices on the issues.
The best condition for a martial artist is where he or her at closest to nature. In previous article (refer to air terjun from http://salampenjuritan.blogspot.com) I had mentioned about waterfall. I would like to suggest if possible trying to meditate at morning, afternoon and night time. Even though we are familiar with surrounding but still everyday still differ especially during the different time of the days. I does not really know how to explained in details but every time I get an opportunity to meditate either in front or close a of a waterfall, I will always get a sense of calmness in which later help me to free my mind of world issues or in hi-tech term defrayments the brains. Only then would I have the chance to meditate. The senses of calmness differ from different environment. E.g. top of a mountain, at a lake, at a sea shore. Researchers claimed that when a person view could see far without be block by objects, the bigger chances a person could relax and give the mind enough energy to think really think. It could true as many will opt to relax at a pier, at an area of mountain (in eg Fraser Hill, Genting highlands). We must know which environment suits us the best.
I would like to quote from Master Yoda words to Luke Skywalker in the Star wars: Empire Strikes back. ‘Focus on the surrounding, remove your thoughts of the world in front; focus on what in front of you……feel the force.
Simple words but meant a world.

YB Datuk Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim with wife Datin Maznah was there to initiated the ceremony at the Parliament building.

YB Datuk Seri Utama is a close friends of both Puan Puteri Nurain bt Megat Shamsudin in Ampang Jaya since the 70’s and also Tuan Haji Megat Mohd. Nordin the father of Ajar-ajar Tua/Grandmaster Megat Ainuddin.

The rise of Penjurit Kepetangan

Hulubalang DiRaja Megat Terawis Ibni Daulat Pagar Ruyung

In the early 15th century, after the fall of Malacca Malays Sultanate empire by the hands of Portugis armada. The last sultan of Malacca which is Sultan Mahmud Shah has moved his kingdom to Kampar in Sumatra (During that particular time was under sovereign of Malacca Kingdom, now currently under the rule of Indonesia Government). This has left the Malay states or known now as Peninsular Malaysia without a legitimate King from the bloodline of Malacca.

Therefore, an urgent meeting was held among the pembesar / state councils to choose a Sultan. Upon agreement, the council has select Tun Saban and Nakhoda Kassim (Captain Kassim) to have an audience with Sultan Mahmud Shah in Kampar to seek blessing from the Sultan and ask over his son prince to be his representative in Perak Darul Ridzuan. This is because as previously in practiced Perak have always be under sovereign of Malacca ever since the days of Beruas Kingdom from north Perak territory till Riau Lingga and Sumatra.

Sultan Mahmud Shah was delighted with the proposal as the Sultan was in the mid of preparing war planned counter attack the Portugis in Malacca. This will leave the Sultan to concentrate on Malacca, while his son to maintain ordership from Perak.

King Mudzaffar Shah and his Queen, Puteri Onang Kening from the bloodline of Kelantan-Pattani were select to be the Sultan in Perak. The sending off King Mudzaffar Shah was done in a very royalty ways as deserved from a Prince of Great Kingdom of Malacca. Along with him, King Mudzaffar Shah also bring along all the Royalty instrument from Malacca which consists of nobat, baur a sword named Cure Si Manja Kini, Hang Tuah legendary keris, Taming Sari, Kings Symbol that made from kempa wood with emblem ‘Sultan Muhamad Shah Dzil Allah Fil Alam and the rest of the instrument as well as equipment from the castle of Malacca.

‘Berguru kepalang ajar, bagai bunga kembang tak jadi’. Regardless how good an Ajar-ajar’s teaching, sometimes the student does not response accordingly. At the end of the journey fit in what Malay phrase ’Berguru kepalang ajar, bagai bunga kembang tak jadi’ literally translate as the teacher teach greatly but the student like a flower that fail to flourish.

Honestly, I am talking about myself. I do consider to be an under achieving student. Given time and after all sacrifice plus value added from an Ajar-ajar like Abang Megat, I should be at least more than basic verse on the knowledge in arts of penjurit-kepetangan. Or should be also deem to be a second generation of Ajar-ajar. Wonder off, what were the things that I failed to understand even worse what the things that I did not do?

Ok, in more positive view. Sure, right now I could be proud that, I am ‘technically’ considered as part of coaching team. The young penjurits are closer coming to their fifth grading soon. It was warmhearted felt to see these young ones to continue improved their skills. Trust me, their kicks and the punches are getting stronger and stronger every week. There 2 main reasons you should feel notable about conducting children class. The first reason is to be able to educate able self defense, to give them a chance to protect themselves or their loving ones in times of need. The alarming increasing rate of crime against children, does make the impression the knowledge pass on will be use rightfully. Secondly the chance to further educate the next generations about our culture and heritage.

On second positive note, being the link between the Master and the juniors.

There is a Malay phrase “Sukakan gaharu kerana baunya, sukakan guru kerana ilmunya’ which means likes gaharu (a form of natural perfume) because of the smell, likes the teacher because of his teachings. As we moved more and more towards a modern day civilization the concept of teacher/Master or in Penjurit Kepetangan as Ajar-ajar, also change. However the relationship between an Ajar-ajar and his students remains a sacred contract, in which both parties are duty bound to teach and learn, to care and to adore. In the old days I’ve being told the ajar-ajar have been strict. Nevertheless it never does fail to provide the student a sense of comfort zone upon set eyes upon. I cant write more about Tok Muslim either Pak Pa’Ad or Pendita Tuan Imam Megat Abdul Rauf Al-rijalululghaibi that abang Megat stories to tell us. Mine to tell about abang Megat. What about him that makes his students here and away still respect and will ultimately try to see him either about ilmu (teachings) or just for casual coffee sessions?.

Well, to begin with he is humble guy. The type of person that makes people comfortable to be around him, freedom to expressed opinions and thoughts. He as Silat Master also does not forecast the image of fierce master. He always stress on diplomacy rather than ‘fistplomacy’. I remember strongly he advises that continuously to warm and caring approach rather than to forceful approach. This personal attributes allowed his teachings to flow inside me easier, an influential figure in seeking guidance. Abang Megat does not preach on good morale values but he will set a great example in terms communications, social-society appearing.

On the contrary most of time ‘Berguru kepalang ajar, bagai bunga kembang tak jadi’.

Where do we go from now - the Young Penjurit

Last week ‘Alhamdulilah’ –IPPM manage to hold its first grading test for 15 students. White belt – strange enough for IPPM to have white belt remind me of my first white belt from other disciple years ago. A sense of achieving a thing that particular day. Let’s see where I begin.

A couple months ago Abg Adeen and I start a silat class at Puncak Alam Fasal 2 primary school, followed by Fasal 1 then Saujana Utama Primary. Ironic rights, to start with 2 then 1 and Utama as third. Its should be 3, 2, 1 contact- a joke okay. Roughly our total students are about 30 active. (Only half takes the grading test- it’s was an option test). After months of training our young penjurit were ready to take their test to earn the white belt- 1st of 9 belt. Abg Adeen, me, Dolah, Capt, Kareno, Megat ‘Jebat’ PD with Wan Khairul, Ku Aswad and his cronies Saka and ever obliged Shidee takes the position as Wasits.

Noted that Dolah was the photography and cinematography with Saka as assistant.

Abg Adeen started the program by taking the long Keris know as Keris Istiadat, Shidee was chosen to buka gelanggang. Then the young penjurits were separate into a group of 4, making 5 groups all together except the last group consist only 3. And so it begins….

Abg Adeen’s daughter with her group was the first to be tested. Its was decide that to enable all the young guns passes, then we will perform the stances together before letting them to perform without the Ajar-ajar. Meaning that we have to do 5 times buka gelanggang, 5 times Nafas Naga and 5 times nafas Rajawali, 5 times Sembunga- ‘Bunga resmi for those that does not know’, with punches and kicking later. Luckily we decide to drop senaman 7 or else………….

In between group, there will be a performance from the so called senior and lastly abg Adeen the big brother himself. Luckily Saka did not bersilat or else well you guys know the story. After 5 buka gelanggang, 5 naga and 5 Rajawali. I ask Ku Aswad to replace me. Not tired just does not want ‘makan sorang’-technically heheeheh. Capt’Azmel and Kareno afterward do the punches and kicking tests.

Finish up around 12.30pm. Graduation time. A dummy certificate was given and photo session.

End of the 1st test. IsyaAllah there will be many again in the future.

(these what i wrote two years ago, just last December2007, we did the grading for the forth times). Talk about time.

The Silat Melayu Styles

Obviously vary widely, but they can conveniently be divided into soft and hard categories. Some styles also have incorporated hard style techniques into sequences of Silat with it’s fluidly and gracefully motions of the martial art.

These silat applicants are subject to a severe screening process and final acceptance by the master if the disciples have completed years of training and experienced that serves them well.

During the old days the disciples of IPPM styles are to be trained early in life usually at the age of seven (7) years old. At the riverbank of Sungai Perak was given vigorous exercises including swimming and diving. Other special training was climbing trees and limestone hills for flexibility in the legs made up another important phase of early training.

The martial art of the Malay Archipelago have always been the melting pot of an integrated region of the culturally and racially diversified society of the Malaysians

The silat system is naturally graceful, harmoniously circular movements employed in many Silat Melayu and Minangkabau styles. Therefore every movement in correct flowing of motions is circular. Megat Terawis is a great warrior from the royal descendent from Istana the palace of Pagar Ruyung, Minangkabau, Sumatera. The knowledge and wisdom of Penjurit Kepetangan begins in the Era of King Adityarwarman in the 14th century, ruler of Malay Empire Sriwijaya. The reign was great enough to match the Empire of Majapahit from Java.

All his descendent had and shall be taught the way of the warrior Penjurit Kepetangan, King Adityarwarman legendary duel is with Gerhana Matahari, a renowned Majapahit warrior.

The coming of Islam has further indication changes in the martial art connoisseur in royal lineage. The legendary warriors from this great dynasty are Megat Alang Dilaut, Megat Panji Alam, Megat Kembar Ali, Raden Mahmud, Megat Seri Rama, whilst on the Princess lines there are Tun Hamzah, Tun Fatah and other.

Dato’ Paduka Megat Terawis Ibni Daulat Pagar Ruyung, the ‘Bendahara’ Prime Minister in Sultanate Palace state of Perak is also a descendent from these illustrious bloodlines.

Megat Terawis was the man responsible to accompany Sultan Muzaffar Shah to be become The Sultan of Perak after the fall of Malacca Sultanate in 1511. He, himself involved with infamous duel with Tun Saban a Chieftain cum warrior on behalf of Sultan Muzaffar Shah. After defeated Tun Saban, Megat Terawis was then rewarded to become the Bendahara (Details of the duel shall be told later).

As the Bendahara, Dato’ Megat Terawis is in charge with the ceremonial and official functions. All this know how and skills are passed down to the children’s children until Megat Ainuddin Bin Megat Mohd Nordin. The entrust keeper of the ilmu Penjurit-kepetangan in the Istiadat Pewaris Penjurit-Kepetangan Melayu-IPPM Association formerly known as Ilmu Persilatan Penjurit- Kepetangan Melayu.
